Labor and Employment Law

Young, Sommer is engaged in a broad spectrum of public and private sector labor and employment law.  The cornerstone of our practice is providing day-to-day advice to employers in the heavy and highway, construction, manufacturing, distribution and retail industries.  Our work is premised on developing a solid working relationship between the employers we represent and their employees and/or unions.  We and our Clients believe that productivity and, therefore, a successful business enterprise, rests upon treating all deserving employees with respect.

Notwithstanding our preference to create non-confrontational employer-employee relationships, we engage in hard collective bargaining as well as the grievance and arbitration process. We have represented our clients in every imaginable administrative venue as well as conducted trials and appeals in state and federal courts.  Among the many substantive issues with which we regularly deal are wages and hours, harassment and discrimination, employee benefits and pensions, workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance,  occupational safety and health issues, unfair labor practice and representation proceedings, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) and plant closures.

We have written employee manuals, employment contracts, substance abuse and anti-discrimination policies.  Additionally, we have assisted in the establishment of not-for-profit corporations.  Further, we represent a number of public authorities and not-for-profit corporations.
