Overview

Family law matters can be complex both legally and emotionally. Our matrimonial and family law attorneys understand this and they approach each case with a sensitivity that only comes from more than 25+ years of experience working exclusively in this area. We take pride in our unique approach and work hard to achieve our client’s desired outcome. Our attorneys are adept at working in either the courtroom or at the bargaining table. We ensure our clients understand every aspect of their case and provide guidance in selecting the best approach for their matter. The way we handle our cases is dictated solely by the needs of our clients. We respond quickly to telephone calls, emails and letters from our clients.

Litigating Family Law Matters

We believe that, in general, the best and most cost-effective result for our clients is usually reached at the bargaining table. However, we recognize that the emotions involved in this area of law frequently prevent equitable resolutions of matters absent court intervention. Our attorneys are zealous advocates in the courtroom. With our 25+ years of experience, we are well known and respected by the local judges in both Supreme and Family Court .

Alternative Dispute Resolution in Family Law Matters

Mediation:
The head of our matrimonial and family law practice area, Stephen C. Prudente, is a trained mediator with years of practice in that area. Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution which brings both parties to the negotiating table along with the mediator. The parties then work through each issue with the help of the mediator in an attempt to settle the matters between them in a peaceful and cost-effective manner.

Collaborative Divorce:
Stephen C. Prudente is also trained in the field of collaborative divorce, a new approach in the area of alternative dispute resolution. The benefits of collaborative divorce are the pledges that the participants (attorneys and clients) make to a non-adversarial divorce. The attorneys sign a pledge that they will not turn to litigation and the clients sign an agreement to be courteous, forthcoming, and respectful of one another. Collaborative divorce has been in effect in several states for a number of years with excellent results. Mr. Prudente is one of the first in the area to become trained and to practice in this field.

Other Areas of Practice

Our attorneys pride themselves in keeping pace with our changing society. In addition to our expanding adoption law practice, we also practice in the developing fields of domestic partnership agreements and cohabitation agreements.

The following Young/Sommer attorneys represent clients in this practice area.
